Port 138 is used for the NetBIOS datagram service, which is responsible for sending and receiving broadcast messages used for name resolution in a network. It is an older protocol, and is typically used in older Microsoft Windows environments. Today, it is mostly replaced by newer protocols such as DNS and WINS.
